The Lowcountry

The Lowcountry doesn’t look like the rest of the Carolina coast, and the moment you arrive you’ll feel the difference before you can even articulate it. The landscape shifts, salt marshes spreading wide on either side of the road, ancient live oaks draped in Spanish moss forming tunnels over two-lane highways, tidal creeks catching the late afternoon light in ways that make you reach for your camera even when you’re driving. This is a place shaped by centuries of ecology and culture, and history in equal measure, and the beaches here, as beautiful as they are, are almost secondary to the experience of just being in the Lowcountry itself.

Hunting Island State Park comes up every single time someone asks me about hidden gems on the Carolina coast, and it deserves every word of praise it gets: eight miles of wild beach, a maritime forest of wind-sculpted palms, a lighthouse you can climb, and salt marsh boardwalks thick with birds and wildlife. Hilton Head anchors the southern end with twelve miles of pristine beach, world-class golf, an incredible biking trail network, and Lowcountry dining that is genuinely some of the best food you’ll eat anywhere on the coast. The whole region moves at its own pace, on its own terms, and once you’ve spent time here you’ll understand why the people who love it tend to love it for life.
