Here is my honest, unqualified opinion: if you can only visit one region of the South Carolina coast, make it this one. I know that’s a bold thing to say when the Grand Strand has sixty miles of beach and Hilton Head has twelve miles of pristine shoreline and the Brunswick Islands have Bald Head Island. But the combination of what you get around Charleston: the variety of the beaches, the quality of the city itself, the food, the history, the sheer number of different experiences available within thirty minutes of downtown is almost unfairly good, and I don’t think it gets enough credit for it.

Sullivan’s Island is quiet and literary and full of Civil War history. Isle of Palms is wide and clean and upscale without being stuffy. Folly Beach is surf culture, live music, beach bars, and the kind of laid-back energy that makes you want to stay an extra day just because. Kiawah Island has ten miles of some of the most ecologically rich and beautiful beaches in the country. And Edisto Beach, furthest south, is the region’s secret weapon with ancient maritime forest, spectacular shelling at Boneyard Beach, and a deeply local feel that the other beaches simply can’t replicate. Five completely different beach personalities within an hour of one of America’s greatest cities. You’re not going to run out of reasons to come back.
