The Cape Fear Coast is the exception to that rule, and once you figure that out it’s hard to go anywhere else. Wrightsville Beach, Carolina Beach, and Kure Beach all sit within easy reach of Wilmington, one of the most genuinely charming and underrated small cities in the entire South, and the combination of serious beach time plus a real city to explore in the evenings is something most coastal destinations simply can’t offer.
Wilmington has a historic downtown riverfront, excellent restaurants, a craft cocktail scene, and more film history than most people realize. A surprising number of movies and TV shows have been shot here over the years. But the beaches hold their own completely. Wrightsville Beach has some of the clearest water on the East Coast and an energy that surfers and paddleboarders and joggers all share comfortably. Carolina Beach has a classic boardwalk feel and a state park full of wild Venus flytraps, which is exactly as cool as it sounds. Kure Beach is quieter and more residential, anchored by Fort Fisher and another excellent NC Aquarium. Come for the beach. Stay for the city. Leave wishing you’d booked an extra few days.
